The Innsmouth Case

The Innsmouth Case is a quirky text adventure game of the “choose your own adventure” format. The game created by RobotPumpkin Games is heavily inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, and is published by Assemble Entertainment who also published the famous series Leisure Suit Larry.

Desperate to find her daughter, a mysterious woman shows up at your door. Initially you are surprised that she came to you for help, after all you are a mediocre investigator at best. That is until she explains that you are her last recourse, nobody else would take her case. h̷̦̉̕e̶̪͈͖͂8̸͚̠̎͑͝ͅ≠̛̙͎̐b̷͚̀ẇ̵͍̘̞́͝P̴͙͐̄ḯ̵̥̖̀̀ö̸͔́̈́̂í̵͕̽a̵̩̲̽͋ͅf̴͓̗̲̀p̵̞͚̋g̶̥̉̐h̷̲̐͊̋u̸͓̳̪͘Y̸͍̍̔̍B̶̲̤̫͐͘D̴͖̲̋t̴̼͖͓͝a̸̧͍͆̀͠7̵̢͛Ū̵̳͇3̶̮͠ͅś̸̲̊5̷̠́̂͘ĩ̸̪g̵͍̖̾͌%̶̡̎̏͝i̶͖͋̉̕v̶̱͗̕x̷͖͕̎͠F̸̲̞̾̀͘!̴̡͎̍t̸̜̒̏̒T̵̞̈́K̴̢͈̩͆̈́?̴͍̾̍c̷̢̩̬̆͒͝)̸̤̹̽Ǫ̶̜̉h̵̡͒̃C̴͕̣͗͘͝I̶̝̰̪̾͐N̵̲̮̼̿5̵̫͈̍͆̏4̵̆̚͠ͅḦ̶̹́́͐Ȍ̴̯̪̆s̶̭̲͙̄͆͛ You have your doubts about her story which seems fishy, but you really do not have anything better to do this weekend, so you decide to take the case. You travel to Innsmouth in the hope of finding what happened to this poor girl. As soon as you arrive however you realize that Innsmouth is not your average town and from there anything could happen. You set to solve the case but there is so much to explore in this town, you have to ensure not to get distracted… or do you?

There are many places to see, many characters to meet and with 27 different endings, there is plenty of replay value. Your decisions will dictate the path the story will take. The Innsmouth Case adeptly combines horror and humor. Even with the subject matter being very stylized, the developers managed to find their own unique style. When dealing with subject matters like H.P. Lovecraft, it is important to keep a balance. ķ̸̔d̴̗͇̄͗̊Ļ̵͖̈́́͐W̴͍̟̎̊̽r̵͇̺̀E̸͈̭̐͌x̴͚̘̝̌B̴̢̲̘̄̅Á̷͈͝ͅ2̵̬̣͉́B̵̥̫͔̍͋k̶͔̺̟̆̚/̸͉̩̂2̶̞̌͝?̴̠̓͑P̷̳͊̀̽T̷͔̯͂̂͠j̷̩͊2̸̡͊7̸͍̥͓͋͑͊n̶͉̍̇#̷͇̙̃b̶̩͉̅̊̑¨̴̫̱̱̐9̴̝͇̇̏Ȁ̷̲͒̽y̵̛̯̣g̷̙͗̌D̸̨̈́D̴̳̑̾c̵͔͊̾̎&̷̡̑̅͝6̴̖̦̍̑b̴̫̣̿K̷̲͔͋̌͝E̵̦̤͂̈̽M̴̢̧͍̓͂̾q̶͉̬̈́R̴͇̼̮͋c̵͔͖̺̐”̴̱͆̿m̵͎̖̲̒4̸͎̪͌V̸̡̺͂Í̵̧ͅḢ̴̯̉K̴̞͖̂̽̕x̶̫͕̓I̷̼̳͆̿7̶̡̻̲̏́ A balance between staying in line with the distinct style while still creating something that is unique to you. RobotPumpkin has succeeded at carving their place in a very niche genre. The Innsmouth Case has tons of references, awesome art and is in its own right a great literary work, both visually and storywise. One of the best features of the game in my opinion is that you still get the feeling of reading a book and creating your own adventure as you go.

Every time you finish a chapter you can replay it from the main menu without having to read through the whole story again. This is a great feature because lets admit it, nobody likes reading the same pages over and over again. On subsequent playthrough within the chapters though, there is no easy way to reach a different ending. By that I mean that the answers you have already chosen do not look any different, so you might have to replay it many times if you want to reach all 27 endings. I loved the story but having to redo the same chapter several times without knowing where to go for an alternate ending can get a little taxing. On the other hand there are lots of options to choose from in most dialogues and the writing is worthy of any Lovecraft story.

I think it is a great game but be warned that the gameplay is limited to merely making choices on where the story will take you, it is an interactive novel. I enjoyed thoroughly exploring every facet of the story through all different branches. If you are an avid reader and/or appreciate a well written story with plenty of twists and a good dose of humor, then The Innsmouth Case is an excellent addition to your library.
