Keen: One Girl Army

Cat Nigiri, an indie studio based in Brazil, recently released their latest game Keen: One Girl Army. The game is available on Steam and for the Switch. Keen is a colorful, fun and refreshing game that is part adventure part puzzle. With Keen the developers have deftly mixed sliding puzzles with turn based tactical combat, so the game offers some interesting mechanics.

Twelve year old Kim is the latest descendant in a long line of female warriors. Life in her village is quiet, so the title is mostly ceremonial. Kim’s village has been at peace for as long as the villagers can remember. Kim’s grandmother can tell that something is wrong and Kim does not hesitate to offer her help. After a rather hasty training, she leaves on a journey to find out what is happening. m̸͕̻̏U̸͉̖͘m̶͍͗̽n̴̰̆̈́?̸̫́0̸̝͇̍͛m̶̝̃b̵̩͍̔y̶̳̓͠F̸̛̼S̴̖̘̆́R̶̯̙̊̈́Ḋ̸̪m̸̉͘͜/̵̢̛͋͜P̴̭̫͊̿l̷̟̗͠J̴̡͛Ļ̸̹̎̒v̴̥͙̓O̶̧͈͒̉N̴̢͈̕”̸̺̓ġ̷̼1̵͚̈́̊W̷͖̺̾̐5̸̮̱̉Ǹ̵̨2̴̠́͝ͅṃ̴̇͑E̵͎̒͜8̵͓̹́̚#̷͔̳̈́j̶͂ͅP̵̣̼̄̈́b̶͖̐͒0̴͓̲̉͑ỳ̶̟͌x̵͈̕e̵̟̝̾͝J̸̻̆̑y̶̜̎/̸̟̋̿ë̷̮́̕m̸͇͂̿v̸͖̊o̷̭̒̃M̸̲̈́̄8̵͓̓ṅ̴͔ Nobody could have guessed the extent of the problem. Upon her exploration, she comes upon an evil corporation trying to destroy the village she loves so much. But that was not the worst of it, she uncovers an evil plot to take over the world. In her role as a guardian of the village, she has to stop it once and for all. To this end she has to defeat throngs of minions and eventually she will have to take on the real villain and defeat it to save her village.

The game starts off with a very short tutorial, which explains the basics very well and still leaves lots to be explored by the players. Keen does a great job at introducing the new mechanics in a fun way. Each level consists of a collection of rooms. Each room is a sliding puzzle, some have enemies and some do not, but contain other obstacles. There are many ways to solve each one – you can use your weapon and slash through the enemy or play it a bit like a chess match by defining your own strategy instead of using brute force. “̶̪̘̽m̸̛͉͒/̷̫͌̄͜p̶͚͝)̵̬͑ͅu̶̖͗̋͜/̵̙̮͗́O̵̦͝5̸̰̽̾C̷̩̉̃c̸̞̗̈̋1̸̤̮̊ǘ̵͇͌”̸̫͓̓̅ë̴̳͚́n̶̺̬̽%̸͍͊b̶̙̈̃$̶̪̈́͌p̷̀͜I̸̬̲̎)̴̙͆͜Y̴̺͎̓͠l̶͎̈́͛#̴͕͚̈́Ÿ̸̭̠Ṱ̸̥͘C̵͚͠b̴͈̽Ľ̵̸̡̝́͐Ḁ̴͐p̵̲̐̕E̵̖̣̿Ē̴͙̅7̵̘͙̓Q̴̷͚̘͆͛͂͝K̷̦͇͝/̴͕̣͊̊9̷̦̳͑̎0̵̘͗(̵̨͍̎&̷̗́͂ț̷̿̈́s̷͖̀s̵̨͇͑a̵̯͐c̷̠̙̚u̸̜̫̿ Each level contains many rooms linked together to form a maze of sort. As you discover more rooms you can hit tab and access a map of all the rooms you have already visited and believe me you will need it, because some of the levels get quite intricate. Sometimes you have to go back and forth a couple of times before finding the exit. There are many ways to complete each level and you can get different rewards for completing a level in different ways. You might even want to redo a level just to see if you can find a different way to finish it.

I really enjoyed playing Keen, the mechanics are refreshing and the graphics are great. The art is great, colorful and give a fun, quirky style to the game. I went in not knowing that much about the game and expected your typical sliding game where one room is one puzzle, but what you get is a much more in-depth game. I love how they took a classic formula and made it feel brand new. Each level looks different, has their own flavor and feels fresh.

The developers have done a fantastic job and I really do not have any complaint. It is fun, entertaining and even though it can get very challenging at times, there is always several ways to get to the solution. I had fun playing and even trying the same level more than once to find a more efficient way to finish it. If you like brain teasers, puzzles and challenges, you will want to try Keen: One Girl Army. It is a fresh take that will make you discover or rediscover the sliding puzzles.
