Shivering Hearts

Shivering Hearts is a role playing game centering mainly on the story. Developed by Mischa, this game is created using the RPG Maker, but it is definitely not your typical RPG Maker game. s̵͈͓̎̌g̸̮̙̋͠2̵̻̫́u̶̫̞̕Ḱ̸̢̰l̷̛͓͂I̷̢̳͆̿/̷̪̈̃L̶̺͉̿p̷͖͂d̵̠̻͌̈́K̶̙̓3̶͇̱̓A̴͍̥̓G̵̤̍́D̷̖̾5̴̛̩̬͘?̷̻͘T̵̪̟̉̍G̵̼͍͐̂*̴̧͖̇̈s̶͓͛͝b̴̦̻̚ḏ̸̤̂#̷̹̜̾ Shivering Hearts is more akin to a visual novel with an open world format and beautiful hand-painted background. The developer said that he created this game in his free time to show his artistic skills. It is always nice to play a game made with love that supports upcoming developers at the same time.

The game revolves around you and your best friend Rin. You are both young adventurers in search of, well… adventures. On your travels you come across the small town of Shivering Hearts. 5̴̖̂̂b̸̯̈v̷̯̰̈́̅K̶̜̤̀d̷̩͂͝d̸̲̗̏”̷̬͋̀s̷͕̯͐̀&̶̞̑0̴͇͒̽ḿ̴̢̗Ț̷̓̕7̷̻̈ͅk̸̢̞͒”̶̣͘ĉ̸͙͕͝Q̴̱̈́z̸̲͂E̷͇͆͐i̴͖͐͂͜X̵̥̱͋͘w̵͚̖͗̀C̶̫̄k̴͎͆o̷͙̱̅͛ At first glance it seems like a regular place, but on further examination and after talking to some of its inhabitants, you come to the realization that there is something strange going on in this town. There has been a series of deaths and nobody seems to know why it is happening. As an adventurer you cannot resist investigating this mystery.

There are 17 characters to meet and discover, each with their own little mystery to uncover. They each have their own personalities and they all have their own dialogue tree. In each conversation you will have many choices that each leads to different consequences. c̴̛̟̓C̸̺̈$̸̡̎̑4̷̛̯͌Y̸͙̝͋̈́A̴͍͎̚Ṁ̶̞̥ő̷̠͗Ĉ̵̯̠2̸̖̬̔h̴̪͈́͝!̶̧̃͝ͅỹ̴̠̐e̸̤͘͝R̶̭̯̅͑5̸̫͗͌D̴̟͓̆ȇ̸͖̙͋7̸̘͙͑B̶̧͌͌?̶̬̩̓D̵͙̒/̶̤͐k̵̩͛r̶̳̿ There is no combat or leveling, it is really all about character interactions. An interesting and novel approach to the RPG genre. The dialogues have a certain humor and are generally well written. It would have been nice to see deeper character development because some of them feel a little shallow at times.

One of the best features of Shivering Hearts is of course the artwork. The graphics are made with detailed hand-drawn watercolor paintings. It gives an ethereal feel to the game and really showcases the developer’s talent. The backgrounds change depending on if it is day, night or even a dream time sequences. I like this thoughtful addition since there is only a couple different backgrounds.

It is not a big game and it can be finished in about 2 to 3 hours. I would have liked to see it go further than it did both with the locations and the story development. I am having a hard time stating it as a downside knowing it has been created by one man alone. This game is clearly a work of love and so I think it is important to keep that in mind when critiquing Shivering Hearts. ¨̷̦̤̎a̶͕̋̉i̴͚̒͠?̷̬̼̑͘ạ̷̟̊k̴̜͠l̴̪͕̅͝ũ̵̺̝̓ò̵̰̬̊I̷̼͛̐z̷̰͝”̴̩̗̾́L̷̲̺̄͒Ű̴̯?̴̼͗n̷̛͈͒”̸̖̈e̵̝͋̑Ţ̵͚͑L̷͙̉͝ẑ̸͎̿ͅC̷̟̓̿T̴͇̊͛ͅC̶͕̀c̵̟͗̀ For the small price I feel like it is a great and entertaining game, if you go into it without expectations. It is a very interesting concept that I have not seen very often before. If you do not mind some reading and like a good story with a bit of suspense, then I do recommend it especially to fans of visual novels.
