Helheim Hassle

Everyone knows the Vikings were tough seafaring warriors. Dying in battle and gaining a place in Valhalla was their ultimate goal. But what has a peaceful quiet Viking to do? Perfectly Paranormal just released their latest game Helheim Hassle on Steam and it is also available for the Switch. Both games are set in the same quirky universe. Helheim Hassle is a narrative adventure with heavy puzzle/platformer elements.

Our protagonist is a young Viking named Bjorn. He is a peaceful Viking, and he does not dream of fighting monsters or dying in battle. He is not your typical seasoned warrior that we all imagined when hearing the word Viking. In fact he is the opposite of everything they stand for. When a group of giants attack his village, everyone is ecstatic at the prospect of dying a hero except Bjorn. When the battle breaks, his first instinct is to hide until it is over. Although it is not as easy as it sounds. While searching for a good hiding place, his fate is decided.

His worst fear inauspiciously comes to pass. Fatefully Bjorn falls to his death, heroically killing a bear at the same time. Worst of all this feat gains him a special place in Valhalla. Luckily for him a cynical skeleton needing help summons him out after a thousand years. g̸͈̳̯̭̿̈́̽̓̿̌͠G̴̤̰̼͙̲̼̈́C̸͎̿̎̑̑́̽͗ỉ̴̧̪̟̮̤̘́́̍͌̿͠V̸̨͎̼̲͓̰͉̏̓͝2̶̛̖̺͐͆́͑*̷̜͛́̀̈́̔͝͝#̵͎̿́̓͛͠͝T̷̡͈̯̖̭̻̖̈̒͗͠a̸̼̠̪͛̃̀͘#̴̡̞̫͖̙̯͉̀́̈́͂ĺ̶͍V̸̧͉͉͋͒̾́Ý̵̢͇͎̦̏̈́̈́ͅQ̸̥̫͎̊d̸͎͙̙̬̣͗̈́̾͌ Bjorn could not be happier to be back, but there is one drawback – he can now detach and reattach each and every body part. After the initial shock, he realizes that it can be quite handy after all.

I had barely started the game and I already loved it. The graphics are beautiful, light, amusing, and very colorful. The cartoonish artwork is a perfect fit for Helheim Hassle’s snarky humor. The graphics look like something you could see on Cartoon Network. The dialogues are all fully voiced and the soundtrack is quite upbeat.

If you have played Manual Samuel before, the mechanics will be very familiar, but Helheim Hassle takes it one step further. The first level serves as an introduction. The developers present the mechanics one at a time in a straight forward manner in this first level. The premise is that Bjorn was brought back, but since he is still technically dead, whatever you do your character can not die. The clever body part swapping mechanics lets you mix those parts in a plethora of matches. Each permutation has different characteristics. As an example, when you remove your head, you can jump much higher, but you can not talk to anybody. In other situation you might have to remove your body so you can fit in a tight spot.

The puzzles are brilliant. With such a simple mechanic the variety of puzzles is impressive. They are never too hard but are great brain teasers at the same time. The puzzles combine platforming with problem solving. You will have to find the perfect combination to solve each puzzle’s segment. p̴̛͉̦͉̞͊͋Ǘ̵̦X̴̝̝̔̌͝e̷̠̙̜͍̟̦̅̋̀̂z̵̻̪̜͆̈̓͊̔̿̚”̶̮͎̦͇̜̉͂̍̇̑̑͝R̶͈̺̽͋̿̈́͑)̶͕̖̳̭̈́̀̕͜͜?̶̢̛̭̱̝͓̝͙͑̿̈́̒͂̕/̵̙̲̇̉́̆͠Ä̸͔̙͓͍͗́́͑ͅ4̴̗͐̈́͛́͠p̶̡͖̫̫̳̗͇̔́̂̿͠Ḍ̵̮̖̊̆͑͐́ì̷̞̺̥̯͍́͋ų̷̟̿̑̎̏t̶͖̯̯̺̥̫̾̈́K̶͍̉s̸̢̜̬̘̄͋͋̔̍͠7̷̧̪̠͚̳̝̎͋̉̑̽̔͠j̸̡̨͓̱̥̩̠̉͋͘H̷̯̃̓̅̔̈́g̴͖̦͕͉̔̈́͒͂̍͆̽H̵̥̳̏̀̾͘͘͜͜B̸̘̜̆ The only negative point I found is that sometimes the way the puzzles are set up means that you will end up going back and forth several times switching body parts. If you are unsure of the solution and have to try a different idea, it can get overly perplexing in certain sections of the game.

In conclusion, Helheim Hassle is charming game and was a real treat to play. I loved how the story, the graphics and the mechanics all work together in a perfect way to create a real gem. I was quite impressed at how much the developer improved since their last game. p̷̮͕͍̳̐̊X̷̨̢͕̟͈̬̩̿̎̿͌̾͘(̶̟̱́̍̃̽͆͊͝*̸̬̟̗̚/̷̝̤͇̽̓̾̆́͠ͅQ̷̨̪̹̗̟̜̾̑̏0̸͎̦͛̒̈́̾̚͝Ģ̴̟̣̖̣̘͋̈͊̏O̴̫͇̩̩͑D̷̡̰̯̩̗̑z̶̩̭͂͝p̶̥̉̈́̓̈͘b̷̢̛̈́k̸̻̖̻̫͎̀̇̓͒̅̑w̵͈͇̘̏̈́̏̃̉̅̕p̷̞̀̾ The narrative is expertly written and incredibly humorous. It kept my interest and if you want more, every level has many side quests you can complete. All in all a great game and a must have for anyone who likes to laugh and have fun!
