Hell Architect is a game about building and managing your own hell. You take on a role of a hell manager and are tasked with developing the underworld in a way that would make Lucifer himself fall off his chair.

Hell Architect offers seven scenarios and a sandbox mode, while the scenarios follow a comical story. For completing the scenarios it will take you about ten hours, give or take an hour. In the game you will be using dirt, metal and coil to build toilets and torture contraptions, but you will also have to take care of your sinners by feeding them and giving them water. All of this is of course optional, since this is Hell, but if you will be a kind hell manager you will also need to secure something for them to sleep on. Besides the option of taking care of your sinners, you will need to grow your Hell’s population and gather resources. The game’s 2D graphics are on the simpler side, but they do look nice. Some people say the game is a rip-off of Klei Entertainment’s Oxygen Not Included, but I have not played it and cannot confirm the claims. The developers do say they were inspired by it, though. If you have doubts about getting the game, you can try the Hell Architect: Prologue for free on Steam.

+ Nice animations and (simple) 2D graphics.
+ Cool sound effects.
+ You get to torture people.
– Taking care of sinners is not too Hellish.
– Gets repetitive and boring quite quickly.
– At times kind of complicated.
– The humour does not always hit the spot.

Final Verdict

Hell Architect looks and sounds great, and it is not too difficult. You get what you have been promised to get, which is a colony simulator in which you order around the inhabitants. The game may turn out boring to some players that might not enjoy the repetitiveness of the game. Like we said, try out the game’s Prologue before making a decision.
